Think of your bones as the foundations that support you through every step and every dream. They're what allow you to move, embrace, laugh, and fully participate in life.

Your bones, the invisible strength of your body

Jul 2, 2025

Think of your bones as the foundations that support you through every step and every dream. They’re what allow you to move, embrace, laugh, and fully participate in life. Often, we take their strength for granted until we feel a limitation or a sense of fragility. However, maintaining bone health is an ongoing and vital process at every stage of life.

There’s a condition called osteoporosis that can silently weaken this essential structure, significantly increasing your risk of fractures. These fractures can truly impact your well-being and your ability to enjoy daily activities. Understanding what osteoporosis is, how it shows up, and what tools we have to prevent it is the first step toward a future with strong bones and an active life.

What is Osteoporosis?

Imagine the inside of your bones as a strong, dense network. Osteoporosis works by decreasing bone density, making bones more porous and fragile. This loss of bone mass can happen gradually and without obvious symptoms, which is why it’s often called the “silent disease.” However, this fragility considerably increases the risk of fractures from bumps or falls that, under normal conditions, wouldn’t cause harm.

What are some symptoms?

In its early stages, osteoporosis usually doesn’t show clear symptoms. This is why early detection is crucial. However, as the disease progresses, some people may experience:

  • A decrease in height over time.
  • Developing a more stooped posture.
  • Persistent back pain which can sometimes be the result of small fractures in the vertebrae.
  • Fractures that occur surprisingly easily, even after mild bumps.

How can we prevent it?

Preventing osteoporosis is a key goal for maintaining an active, healthy life long-term. Fortunately, there are effective strategies we can incorporate into our daily lives to strengthen our bones and significantly reduce risk:

  • Good nutrition: Prioritize a diet rich in calcium, the main component of your bones, and Vitamin D, which helps absorb it. Include dairy, leafy green vegetables, fatty fish, and fortified foods.
  • Consistent exercise: Engage in regular physical activity like walking, dancing, or light weightlifting. This stimulates bone formation and strengthens their structure.
  • Healthy lifestyle: Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as both can weaken bones and compromise your overall well-being.
  • Bone Density Scan (DXA): This simple, painless test measures your bone mineral density and is a valuable tool for detecting osteoporosis before a fracture occurs. Your rheumatologist may recommend it, especially if you have risk factors.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with your rheumatologist: Regular visits and open communication with your rheumatologist are essential to assess your osteoporosis risk, perform timely screenings, and receive personalized recommendations to maintain your bone health throughout the years.

At Rheumatology Plus, we’re dedicated to your bone health. If you have questions, concerns, or risk factors for osteoporosis, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to evaluate your situation, perform necessary tests, and work with you on a prevention or treatment plan that fits your needs.
